How pool water temperature is predicted

Why water is not the same as air
Air temperature swings quickly. Pool water has mass: gallons (or liters) that take time to warm and cool. After a cold night, the surface may feel chilly while the bulk water is still moderate. After a heat wave, water can stay swim-friendly even when the next morning’s air is crisp.
That lag is why people search for a pool water temperature prediction instead of relying on the weather app alone. The question is really: given my volume and this week’s weather, where is the water headed?
The heat-balance idea (in plain language)
Each half-day, the model estimates energy added to or removed from the water, then updates temperature. Think of a ledger:
- Gains — sunlight into the water, warm air (sometimes), condensation in rare cases, heater energy (if modeled)
- Losses — evaporation, cool air convection, longwave radiation to a clear sky, cooler rain mixing in
Larger, deeper pools change more slowly for the same surface weather. Shallow water reacts faster to sun and cold snaps.
Weather drivers we use
Forecasts pull local weather via Open-Meteo, including:
- Solar radiation — primary natural heater on clear days
- Air temperature & humidity — drive convection and evaporation
- Wind — speeds evaporation and convective cooling (we assume a typical fenced yard, not an open lakeshore)
- Clouds — reduce sun and change night-sky cooling
- Rain — cooler water and mixing; covers intercept most of the drop volume
Pool inputs that change the story
- Starting water temperature — best when you measure it; optional weather-based estimate if you do not know it
- Surface area and average depth — set thermal mass (volume)
- Sun exposure — full sun vs heavy shade scales solar gain
- Pool type — in-ground vs above-ground changes rough heat exchange with surroundings
- Cover (Pro) — solar/bubble vs solid changes evaporation, sun, and rain intercept
- Heater (Pro) — fixed hours/day or hold a set point, with rough energy cost from your rates
Covers and heaters in the model
Open water loses a lot of heat through evaporation. A solar cover cuts that loss while still letting some sunlight through. A solid cover blocks most solar gain but can hold heat overnight and shed rain. Neither is perfect in real yards—edges leak, covers wrinkle, and wind still finds a path—so results are estimates, not lab certificates.

What the model does not know
- Unmeasured shade trees, building shadows that move by hour, or temporary tarps
- Exact wind shelter vs a hilltop lot
- Splash-out, water features, or heavy use cooling
- Heater history if you use “estimate from weather” spin-up
- Perfect cover seals or brand-new vs worn bubble covers
Weather forecasts themselves revise. Treat the outlook as a planning tool: which days look warmest, whether a front will kill weekend swimming, and whether a cover or a few heater hours are worth it.
How to get a better forecast
- Enter a recent thermometer reading for today’s water
- Use real dimensions when you can (or the typical-size shortcut for a first pass)
- Match sun exposure honestly (partial shade is common)
- Re-run after big weather changes or if you add a cover mid-week
FAQ
Is a pool temperature forecast the same as air temperature?
No. Air highs and lows matter, but pool water has thermal mass. It lags the weather, so a hot afternoon may not fully warm a cold pool, and a cool night may only shave a degree or two off deep water.
